My name is Paul Toal and I live in a remote rural part of North West Ireland, a place I am privileged to live, work and train my dogs. In between my job as a teacher I am constantly fuelling my passion in retrievers, breeding occasionally, training constantly and enjoying the invitations to judge or train.

I am proud that my Altiquin prefixed dogs have been sent to many places around the world making their mark in competition, hunting and family companions. I have made three dogs into Irish FTCH, all competing on many occasions in the Irish Championship and international events.

Last year I had two very memorable trips to the Czech Republic. One was to help train handlers and their dogs at a training camp just outside Prague, and the other to judge a trial at Konopiste. It was great to meet new and old friends at both those events. I am delighted to be asked back to judge this mock-trial and working test, and I am looking forward to seeing all the dogs and handlers in what I am sure will be another ‘international’ event.

I wish all competitors the very best of luck. Let us all celebrate the hard work we all put in to our dogs and enjoy the fruits of our labour over the coming days. It is worth enjoying!

During my early life i had the good fortune to grow up in the company of dogs, in fact i cannot remember a time without a dog at my side. Shortly after i married my wife Pauline, we acquired our first black Labrador and at that time i dont think we realised how much dogs would take over our lives.

I have had many years experience in training dogs – my own and those of many other dog owners. I have always found great pleasure in training dogs and their owners and my satisfaction is complete when i see them achieve the degree of success the owners set for themselves. I also derive great pleasure from competing in Field Trials, having made up two Field Trial Champions one of which i bred. Another aspect of my life is judging at Field Trials and i consider it an honour and a privilege to be an A panel Judge. The roles of judging and training have taken me all over the UK and several other countries besides. My enthusiasm for all aspects of dog training has grown considerably over the years and i cannot envisage a better way to spend my time.
